How much does jewellery remodelling cost?

So, how much does jewellery remodelling cost? Jewellery remodelling can be a daunting process. Most people have no idea of the costs involved & are sometimes torn between remodelling an old piece vs selling it & buying a new piece. Here are some tips for resetting your old jewellery & an idea of prices…..

Decide what the jewellery means to you

Are you considering remodelling your jewellery for sentimental reasons, or to save money? If it’s the latter ask your jewellers if the project is economically viable. If, on the  other hand it’s for the sentiment, then you may want to pay the same or even a little more than the finished piece is worth so that you can wear that treasured heirloom again.

What is precious metal(s) are old jewellery made from?

If your jewellery is Gold of any colour (white yellow or rose) then it is almost always a lot cheaper to remodel your jewellery than to buy a new piece. This is because Gold prices are so high these days. If your jewellery is Silver (actual Silver not to be confused with Silver coloured metals like Platinum or white Gold) then it will cost you a lot more to remodel that to buy a new piece. This is because the labour to hand make a new piece far outweighs the value of the Silver you are supplying. Silver is also a very soft metal, not ideal for everyday wear. Bearing this in mind most people that remodel Silver only do so if the old jewellery has an incredibly high sentimental value as this customer did: Family jewellery from Silver cutlery set.

Should you just sell your old jewellery & put the money towards something new instead?

DEFINITELY NOT! Second hand jewellery shops are incredibly harsh when buying in jewellery usually offering just 25%-33% of the jewellery’s retail value. This means if you were to sell your old jewellery & buy something new you would effectively be downgrading your jewellery. For example if you had a ring worth £2,000 you would get £500-670 for it. You then spend that on a new ring & as you can guess it would be an inferior piece. For this reason it is always better to remodel your jewellery.

So what are the costs involved for jewellery remodelling?

One big factor is to consider when calculating what jewellery remodelling will cost you is working out if there will be any Gold left over. If there is customers at RING jewellers are welcome to use this as part payment. We once made a pair of heavy Gold rings for a mother & daughter & after the left over Gold was taken into account not only did the customers have nothing to pay but we paid them £700!

What jewellery remodelling costs – a price list

The most cost effective type of jewellery remodelling commission is to melt some gold & make a simple band so the list starts with that:

Plain band £295

Textured or grooved band £395 Click for example: Circular ring remodelled into ‘blade’ rings

Engraved band £445-£495 Click for example: Family signet ring reset into engraved band

Diamond solitaire £595-£995 Click for example: 5 stone reset into a solitaire engagement ring

A strand ring or a random rubover ring from £595 Do bear in mind these designs can cost a lot more depending on the amount of setting labour & metal/stones we have to supply. Click for example: 2 rings reset into a strand ring

All prices were correct for RING jewellers at the time of publishing. Other store may, & probably will, charge more! (May 2024).
