Are wedding rings supposed to match?

Should wedding rings match?

When it comes to the symbol of love and commitment that is the wedding ring, there’s often a question that arises: Should wedding rings match? This query has sparked debates and discussions among couples planning their nuptials, and the answer is as varied as the love stories behind each pair of rings.

The truth is, whether or not wedding rings should match is a matter of personal preference. There is no hard and fast rule dictating that they must be identical. In fact it is becoming less & less common for couples to have matching wedding bands. The decision ultimately lies with the individuals exchanging vows. Some couples may opt for matching rings as a symbol of unity and togetherness, while others may prefer rings that reflect their individual personalities and styles. The main thing to consider is that neither of you wants to compromise on a design that both of you think are sort of OK & yet neither of you love. Remember this is a ring that you will be wearing for the rest of your life!

For those who choose to have matching wedding rings, there are numerous options available to achieve this without the rings being carbon copies of each other. One popular approach is to select rings that complement each other in design or style. This can be achieved through various means, such as choosing rings with similar elements. A gents ring might have a groove, different metal, or an engraving where the matching ladies band has a row of Diamonds as below.

Engravings are also a way of tying the rings together without them being the same. One ring may have a bold, laser engraved fingerprint  on the outside giving a blackened texture whilst the other ring may have a more subtle engraving outside. Gemstones are another way to make wedding rings match. The wedding rings below feature a row of baguette cut Sapphires in one ring complimented by a single square Sapphire in the other. Both rings have a square top. They are far from identical, but at the same time are a lovely matching pair!

One creative way to make wedding rings match without them being identical is by opting for bicolor or even tricolour designs. These rings feature different metals, such as yellow gold and white gold side by side or mixed as in the Mokume Gane process shown below, creating a harmonious and visually appealing contrast. Bicolor wedding rings not only symbolise the coming together of two individuals but also represent the beautiful blend of their unique characteristics and traits. You can even reverse the metal colours to suite your preference. One partner may have a yellow gold ring with Platinum rails (edges), whilst the partner’s ring could be Platinum with yellow gold rails.

Another approach to coordinating wedding rings is to choose bands with matching motifs or patterns. For example, couples may opt for rings featuring a common symbol, such as Celtic knots, or infinity loops. These shared elements serve as a meaningful reminder of the couple’s bond and shared values while allowing each individual to express their style.

Furthermore, couples can explore customising their wedding rings to ensure they complement each other while still reflecting their distinct tastes. Customisation options abound, from selecting unique gemstone combinations to incorporating personal engravings or motifs that hold special significance to the couple. By visiting a reputable jewellery store like RING jewellers, couples can create bespoke wedding rings that perfectly capture their love story.

It’s important to remember that the significance of wedding rings lies not in their outward appearance but in the love and commitment they symbolise. Whether matching or not, the true beauty of wedding rings is found in the sentiment behind them and the journey they represent.
