Resetting old jewellery - a guide by RING jewellers
Here is our step by step guide to remodelling your old jewellery:
Firstly, send us photos of your current jewellery, along with pictures or a description of how you would like the new piece to look. The photos for the new design do not have to be exactly how you envisage the finished item, they could just be styles of ring or types of diamond setting that you like. Please also let us know who the ring is for because we sometimes make ladies jewellery from gents pieces & vice versa. You can email your photos to: firstname.lastname@example.org
Let us know if you would like the finished ring to be yellow, white or rose coloured. In the interest of honesty here's how we would use your metal: If your metal is yellow & you would like the finished piece to be yellow we will actually melt & reuse it. For finer gold work like collets (stone settings) we will supply metal to avoid multiple joins & weak points. If your metal is yellow & you would like the finished piece to be white or rose you can use your metal as part payment but we would not be physically using it. Alternatively we can return your old settings & just use your gemstones. If your metal is white & you would like the finished piece to be white you can use your metal as part payment but we would not be using it. This is because white metals contain alloys that make it prone to cracking when reworked.
Do bear in mind that you often need more gold weight than you may think. This is for 2 reasons. Firstly, there is a loss in weight when you melt & reuse gold. The other reason is sometimes customers rings have hollowed out sections inside (this can often be seen inside the ring in the shoulders, either side of the main gemstone). This means although a ring might look wide, it contains very little gold weight.
If you like the idea of using family gold but only wear white metals we can use the yellow gold as a subtle detail i.e. a gold 'liner' that you only see inside the ring when you take it off, or a narrow edge in gold (for example a 7mm gents ring with 1mm of yellow gold on one side).
